Meditation Of The Month

Meditation of the Month: Live Fully After Death!

From the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra: “Focus on fire rising through your form from the toes up until the body burns to ashes but not you.”
The meditations in the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra cover all aspects of life, including death. This sutra allows us to experience death before physically dying, which in turn means we are more able to live.
What is that which transcends death? All the mystics down the ages have spoken about the deathless, that which is never born and never dies, which is what we are focusing on in this particular sutra. To practise this meditation:
1) Make a temple space for yourself to lie down in, preferably in a darkened room – you could use candles, incense and anything else that feels appropriate. You could use music or sounds such as low Tibetan chanting, or you can have pure silence.
2) Lay down and use your imagination to sense and feel that you are dead and lying on your funeral pyre. You can imagine your friends and family are there, celebrating and singing your favourite songs.
3) Imagine someone is bringing the match to light the pyre – see it catch light and feel the flames rising, and your body burning.
4) You can imagine that the flames are rising from your toes, slowly up your body to your legs, torso, hands, arms, head, until your entire body burns to ash – but not you. Take your time with this process, go as slowly as you need to in order to really feel your whole body burning away.
5) What is left? Taste it, feel it, it is very powerful. Continue lying down and allow yourself to experience that which transcends death. Have a bath in the state of the deathless for some time – 20 – 40 minutes. You can set a timer before the meditation starts, come round when you are ready or ask a friend to call you back.
6) Call yourself back or ask a friend to, using these words: ‘Okay now (insert your name), it is time to come back, into the body, into life’. And as you come back, come back in a new way, with an awareness of that which is never born and never dies. You can call yourself back three times or ring a gong three times.
Once you’ve had a taste of the deathless and bring that awareness into your daily life, it brings a certain detachment, and you are no longer so troubled by all the little niggly things that happen in life.
