Meditation of the Month: Sensual Fulfilment

From the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra: “When eating or drinking, become the taste of the food or drink, and be filled.”
You can do this with a partner, a friend, or for yourself. Allow at least one and a half to two hours for this meditation to include preparation time and plenty of time to luxuriate in the experience.
How to practise this meditation:

  • Prepare a senusous meal, including a variety of tastes and scents. It’s best to use only freshly prepared food, not packaged or frozen, to really enhance the sensual experience! Spicy foods are ideal, though avoid garlic as its anesthetic qualities lower sensitivity and its strong smell tends to override other flavours. Include a good wine or other quality drink.
  • Blindfold yourself or your partner and sit really comfortably. You may also wish to be naked. If you are doing the meditation by yourself, cover the area you are eating in so you don’t need to worry about making a mess and you can feed yourself with your hands.
  • Feed yourself or your partner very slowly and sensuously so every taste can be savoured. If you are receiving, allow yourself to make sounds of pleasure and appreciation. If you are the giver, you may want to whisper the sutra from time to time.
  • If you are practising with a partner, once you have finished the meal or the person receiving has had their fill, exchange roles.
